Clinical Biography
Alireza Abdollah Shamshirsaz, MD, FACOG, is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and maternal–fetal medicine specialist and the Director of the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center, a clinical partnership between Dell Children's Medical Center and UT Health Austin. He is an internationally recognized expert in fetal surgery, placenta accreta spectrum disorders, and complex high-risk pregnancies, and specializes in advanced fetal interventions, including fetoscopic and open fetal surgery, treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, fetal airway procedures, congenital anomalies, and multidisciplinary management of placenta accreta spectrum. Additionally, Dr. Shamshirsaz is a professor and the Division Chief for Fetal Medicine and Therapy in the Dell Medical School Department of Women's Health at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Shamshirsaz earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, followed by multiple research fellowships in endocrinology, renal disease, and obstetrics and gynecology at multiple institutions, including the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He completed a residency at the University of Iowa, a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the State University of New York at Buffalo, a fellowship in maternal–fetal medicine at the University of Connecticut, and a fellowship in perinatal surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital through Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Shamshirsaz, a prolific clinical scientist and educator, has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to major textbooks, and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Editor-in-Chief of Pregnancy (the official journal of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine). His research has advanced fetal surgery techniques, placenta accreta management, innovative fetal imaging, and emerging fetal therapies, including regenerative medicine and stem cell-based interventions. He has led numerous NIH-funded and multi-institutional studies, developed global fetal surgery training programs, and mentored clinicians and researchers worldwide. He also holds prominent leadership roles with the North American Fetal Therapy Network (NAFTNet), Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), and International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD), and is a co-founder of the Pan-American Society for Placenta Accreta Spectrum.
