Clinical Biography
S. Joga Ivatury, MD, MHA, is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon in both Digestive Health, a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin, and UT Health Austin's Surgical Oncology Clinic. He is also a part of UT Health Austin’s CaLM Care Team. He specializes in colon and rectal surgery. Additionally, Dr. Ivatury is an associate professor and serves as the inaugural Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery for the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Ivatury earned both his medical degree and master’s in health administration from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
Dr. Ivatury's clinical interests include treatment and prevention of malignant colon and rectal disease, surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, and complex anorectal surgery. His primary goal is to optimize colon and rectal cancer care while minimizing morbidity and maximizing quality of life. His research focus includes quantitative and qualitative research work on patient-reported outcomes, shared decision-making, and patient education. He led the development of an EMR (electronic medical record)-integrated patient-reported outcomes program at Dartmouth, patient education materials for rectal cancer for the Rectal Cancer Education Project, and practice protocols to meet each unique patient’s needs. He is also interested in survivorship after rectal cancer treatment. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
