Sowmith Rangu, MD, FRCPC

Clinical Biography

Sowmith Rangu, MD, FRCPC, is a board-certified pediatric cardiac critical care intensivist in the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, a clinical partnership between Dell Children’s Medical Center and UT Health Austin. He specializes in ­­­cardiac critical care. Additionally, Dr. Rangu is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Rangu earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Canada. He completed both an internship and residency in pediatrics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, followed by pediatric cardiology training at the University of Alberta in Canada. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiovascular intensive care and a fellowship in pediatric advanced cardiac therapies at Stanford University, where he gained specialized skills in both temporary and durable mechanical circulatory support (MCS)

Dr. Rangu’s clinical interests focus on optimizing outcomes in pediatric cardiac intensive care. He has a particular focus on temporary and durable MCS in children, especially those with complex congenital heart disease. His research investigates the optimal timing for MCS implementation and the factors that influence outcomes in children requiring mechanical support.

Dr. Rangu is a pediatric cardiac critical care intensivist with UT Health Austin.
