UT Austin Adult Genetics Clinic

The UT Austin Adult Genetics Clinic is a specialty clinic within Women’s Health, a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin.

The UT Austin Adult Genetics Clinic provides evaluation and support for adult patients (18 years and older) with a known or suspected genetic disorder, as well as those with a family history of a genetic condition. Our team also provides care for both male and female patients, including individuals currently pregnant or planning a pregnancy who may have inherited health concerns.

We work with you to perform a genetics-focused physical exam, order and interpret genetic testing, and provide counseling to guide future screening and treatment decisions. We also offer review and interpretation of genetic test results from other providers when results are complex or require additional explanation. For patients who were diagnosed with a genetic condition in childhood, we offer continued care as they transition to adult services.

The UT Austin Adult Genetics Clinic care team is comprised of board-certified clinical geneticists, including a maternal-fetal medicine and genetics specialist, as well as certified genetic counselors who are experienced in working with a wide range of hereditary conditions. We use the latest advancements in genetic technology and provide compassionate, personalized counseling to help you understand your health risks and options.

Patients are cared for by a dedicated multidisciplinary care team, meaning you will benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists across a variety of disciplines. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained board-certified clinical geneticists, including a maternal-fetal medicine and genetics specialist, as well as certified genetic counselors, have extensive experience evaluating and managing a broad range of genetic conditions and work alongside a team of women’s health experts, including advanced practice providers, dietitians, social workers, and more, providing unparalleled care for patients every step of the way.

We also collaborate with our colleagues at the Dell Medical School and The University of Texas at Austin to utilize the latest research, diagnostic, and treatment techniques, allowing us to provide comprehensive, coordinated care designed to meet your specific needs.

Our goal is to understand your personal and family medical history, discuss whether a genetic condition may be contributing to your health concerns and answer any questions you have. Every visit is tailored to your specific reason for referral.

Clinic location:

• Our clinic is located at 1301 W. 38th Street in the Medical Park Tower building. We are on the 2nd floor, Suite 205.
• Our office is located within the Women's Health department, where many pregnant patients come for ultrasound appointments. If you're visiting us for a genetics appointment, don't worry—you are in the right place.
• You are welcome to bring a support person with you to your visit.

Please bring to your visit:

• Your insurance card
• Photo ID
• Any previous genetic test results or relevant medical records
  

Consultation information:

• The consultation typically lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.
• At your visit, we will start by reviewing your medical history, surgical history, what medications you’re taking and allergies.
• A physical exam may be performed depending on the reason for referral.

Family history:

• We will obtain a detailed family history, including medical problems in any children, siblings, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins and grandparents.
• If you’re able to find out this information ahead of time, that can be very helpful. However, it's completely okay if you don't know all of the details.
• Important information about relatives might include:
  • Medical diagnosis and approximate age of first symptoms or diagnosis
  • Any cancer diagnosis: what age someone was diagnosed, what type of cancer they had and if they ever had genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes
  • Approximate age of death of any relatives
  • Information about any babies born with birth defects or genetic conditions

Genetic testing:

• If genetic testing is appropriate, we'll discuss: whether testing may be helpful for you, the benefits and limitations of testing, possible results and what they may mean, as well as cost and insurance coverage, when available.
• If testing is ordered, a blood sample can usually be collected after your appointment on the same floor.
• You do not need to fast before your visit. You may eat and drink normally unless you've been given other instructions.
• Most genetic test results are available within two to four weeks.
