About This Program
The Dell Children's Center for Pulmonary Hypertension is a specialty program closely associated with the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, a clinical partnership between Dell Children’s Medical Center and UT Health Austin.
The Dell Children's Center for Pulmonary Hypertension diagnoses, treats, and manages the care of infants, children, and adolescents with pulmonary hypertension, a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. In pulmonary hypertension, the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs become narrowed, blocked, or destroyed, making it harder for blood to flow through the lungs. This increased pressure forces the heart to work harder to pump blood through the lungs, which can lead to the weakening of the heart muscle and eventually heart failure if left untreated.
The Dell Children's Center for Pulmonary Hypertension care team is comprised of nationally recognized and highly specialized physicians across different disciplines, who consult in the cardiac care unit, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Dell Children’s Medical Center. With access to expert staff and advanced technology, we provide a wide range of services, from evaluation, testing, and diagnosis to medical management, rehabilitation, heart surgery, and more, to give patients and their families the best quality of life.
The Dell Children’s Center for Pulmonary Hypertension is the only pediatric pulmonary hypertension center in Central Texas.
Treatment Approach
The Dell Children's Center for Pulmonary Hypertension uses a range of blood, heart, and lung tests to help diagnose your child’s condition. A thorough diagnosis is essential to determine the cause of pulmonary hypertension, which may stem from congenital heart disease, prematurity, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, genetic factors, blood or connective tissue disorders, or in some cases, an unknown cause. We work closely with you to discuss your child’s diagnosis, explore treatment options, and outline the steps for ongoing care. Together, we will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your child's needs and your family's preferences.
Patients are cared for by a dedicated multidisciplinary care team, meaning you and your family will benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists across a variety of disciplines. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric pulmonary hypertension specialists have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating pulmonary hypertension and work alongside a team of experts, including advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, child life specialists and physical therapists, and more, providing unparalleled care for patients and their families every step of the way.
