Fun Facts From Our Super (Neuro) Bowl
Each year as part of the Pediatric Neuroscience Wellness Program, we host a medically themed trivia contest at the kickoff of Super Bowl weekend. Below is one of the questions from our contest.
Question: Based on the traditional title of this Francisco de Goya painting, this child would be most likely to have what neurological condition?
The traditional title of this painting is Curacion del Garrotillo, or “Treatment of Diphtheria,” an infection that is sometimes complicated by peripheral neuropathy. Although Goya is thought to have completed the painting sometime between 1802 and 1812, he did not assign a title. The painting was eventually obtained by the physician Gregorio Maranon (1887–1960), who interpreted the scene as a physician attempting to prevent suffocation by the pharyngeal membranes of diphtheria. It was Maranon who assigned the title we now use.
However, a more likely explanation is that Goya’s painting depicted a scene from the contemporary Spanish novel El Lazarillo de Tormes in which a blind man examines the mouth of his servant lad for the smell of a stolen sausage. Aside from their possible contribution to atherosclerosis, we are unaware of medical complications from eating sausages.
